What ages is the Curiosity Box suitable for?
We have boxes for all children aged 4-11:
Our original Curiosity Box is aimed at children aged 7-11 and in years 3-6 of Primary School. We also link all topics and activities to the KS2 Curriculum.
If your child is aged 3-6, you want our all-new Curiositots Box. These boxes are linked to the KS1 curriculum and have all the sciency fun of their elder sibling.
With all our boxes we encourage grown-ups to offer their services as trusty lab assistant, and it’s up to you and your cadet what activities you do together. All we ask, is that you follow our safety instructions.
What does STEM mean?
STEM is simply an acronym and stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. You might also come across STEAM which is just Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.
What’s the difference between a regular and gift subscription?
When you sign up for a Curiosity Box, you can choose if you want it your monthly* delivery of STEM-tastic action to continue until you say stop (in which case select a regular subscription), or if you want your delivery to stop after 3, 6 or 12 months (in which case select a gift a subscription). The choice is yours. Just tick auto-renew if you want it to carry on automatically and then you can pause or cancel at any time when you want to.
What’s the difference between buying a box as part of a subscription and buying one from the Curiosity Shop?
We make a limited amount of boxes each month for our regular subscribers, so if you buy a box as part of a subscription, you’ll receive a different one every month (or every two months for our Curiositots cadets) with a new theme. We put any leftover boxes into our Curiosity Shop, so they’re available for anyone that wants to buy a single box to try it out or as a gift. We do this every month, so if you want to just see what the boxes are like, or have a Cadet who is mad on a particular topic, it’s always worth checking what we’ve got in our shop.
What’s the difference between a Jumbo Box, a Nano Box and a Pico Box?
A Jumbo box contains 3-4 science activities for children. This is about 4-5 hours of activity time. The Jumbo box also comes with extras like reusable science collectables and Molymods, so your cadet can build up their at-home lab with each box.
A Nano box contains 2 activities – about 2 hours of activity time.
A Pico box contains 1 activity pack – about 1 hour of activity time. If you’re on the fence, we recommend you start with this one and see how you and your cadet get on. If you find you want more you can upsize any time! You can upsize as a one-off if you spot a topic that you know your cadet will adore.
I’ve just joined the Curiosity Box community; When should I expect my first box?
Jumbo: If you sign up before midnight on 4th of the month, you’ll receive your first box around the 10th of that same month. If you sign up after the 4th of the month, your first box will arrive around the 10th of the following month.
Nano and Pico: If you sign up before midnight on 8th of the month, you’ll receive your first box around the 13th of that same month. If you sign up after 8th of the month, your first box will arrive around the 13th of the following month.
What is the Get Set Email?
We send all our subscribers, an email every month to accompany the new box. This email gives you some extra info that will help and enhance the Curiosity Box experience. From safety info to tips on how to get the most out of each activity, to quirky facts about the topic – we send this email just before you receive the box to whet your appetite and help you get a feel for what’s coming!
I’ve had my first box, but another payment has already been taken. When do I get my next box?
Our payment cycle works like this:
We take payment and renew your subscription on the 15th of every month, or every other month if you get the Curiositots Box. You’ll then receive your next box around the 10th of the following month.
Help! My box hasn’t arrived!
OK. first things first. Do you have a box due? Please see the “When do I get my next box?” question above.
If you’re still concerned that you’re missing a box, we’ll be happy to investigate but before we send out our sciency sleuths, it’s worth checking you haven’t missed a card from the Postman saying they tried to deliver it. Please also have a quick look on your account and check that we’ve got your correct delivery address, and that it hasn’t been sent somewhere else.
If none of these apply, and you think your box is lost please contact us on [email protected] or ring on 01865 546145, and we’ll help you track it down.
Will my membership automatically renew?
You’re in complete control of your account and can skip, pause, cancel or change your subscription at any point by logging into your account. If you’ve ticked the ‘Do Not Auto Renew’ option, then your subscription will expire at the end of the term you signed up for. Otherwise, we’ll send you confirmation of your renewal along with details of the next box theme.
If you have purchased a fixed term Gift Subscription, your subscription won’t automatically renew, but if you’d like it to continue, just log into your account and either buy another fixed term gift subscription or switch to a full-fat membership subscription.
What if I want to cancel my Membership?
We hate to see subscribers go, but if the Curiosity Box isn’t for you, you can cancel any time by logging in to your account. Just don’t be surprised if you receive a teary email from us!
Can I send my box to a different address?
Yes you can. When you subscribe, you can add a delivery address that’s different your billing address. If you decide you want to change the address after signed up, just log in to your account and update your delivery address.
How do I know what the box topic will be?
We’ll let you know the topic of each box by email, and we also post updates here on our website and our Facebook page, so you’ll always know what’s coming.
What is The Curiosity Shop?
The Curiosity Shop is the place where you can buy an awesome birthday gift subscription, stock up on cool sciency kit, or e-grab everything you need to have a STEM themed party. If you’re missing a box that came out before you joined, we have a limited stock of previous boxes for sale too.
How many curious minds can 1 box accommodate?
We’ve design each STEM subscription box to work for one child. But we make sure we include enough supplies to allow for mistakes and repeating experiments, and so when we’ve tested activities out in small groups (say up to 3 children), we’ve found that there’s easily enough kit for sharing.
Is everything I need included in the box?
We include all the specialist equipment and for the most part, all the other bits and bobs you need. But there are a few things that we can’t include because we aren’t allowed to ship them, they’re too large/fragile (like an egg!), or they’re things that you’re bound to have at home. We always give you a run down of anything you need in your Get Set email, so that you can go on a little rummaging expedition before your box arrives.
What are the poster and the stickers for?
When you subscribe, your cadet will receive a welcome gift of a poster in your their box. Then each month we’ll include 2 stickers that match up with the month’s topic and the Champion for them to stick on their poster. Once they’ve filled all the spaces on their poster, they can send us a photo of themselves with their completed poster, and we’ll send them their official Professor of Curiosity certificate and a special gift.
What’s the difference between ‘membership’ and a gift subscription?
When you subscribe to The Curiosity Box membership, you choose from 4 levels: Trainee, Pico, Nano or Jumbo. If you’re a Trainee, you’re a free member who will receive some sciency love via email or via your account to keep your curiosity cadet interested in STEM. Our Pico membership is our entry level membership where you’ll also receive one box per month with a science activity included. Our Nano membership incorporates two fab STEM activities and anything else we can fit in the box. Our Jumbo membership is our most comprehensive membership where you’ll get 3-4 activities plus collectables so you can build up your own home lab!
What shipping options do you offer?
We ship all our boxes by Royal Mail 2nd Class, which can take 2-3 days to arrive. Our boxes are not tracked (but if anyone ever invents printable micro GPS trackers…).
We can ship boxes to anywhere in the UK as part of the subscription cost. We also ship to mainland Europe, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea. International postage will apply to all non-UK destinations.
Help! My box is damaged/leaking! What do I do?
Don’t worry, we’re totally prepared. Let us know by emailing us at [email protected] or by calling us on 01865 546145. We’ll log it, and send you a replacement box straight away. We also recommend that you dispose of the box safely. We never include anything in our boxes that’s highly hazardous but, we like to play it safe so if your box is leaking, please wear some safety or rubber gloves before handling the contents. All the packaging is either recyclable (instruction cards and box) or compostable (the little bags that we use the package each activity up). If you get the Jumbo or Curiositots boxes you might be able to salvage the collectables as well. (but we’ll still replace them.)
How safe are the activities?
All of our activities are with your child’s safety at the top of our list of must-haves. We don’t let anything out of CBHQ without making sure it’s fully compliant with the latest Health and Safety legislation. We also let you know which activities might need you to help out or supervise in your Get Set email. From time-to-time we have edible activities, so if your child has any allergies, please let us know when you subscribe, so we can make a note on your account and swap out any activities with a non-food alternative.
My experiments aren’t working…what should I do?
Every brilliant scientist needs a helping hand from time-to-time! Just drop us an email [email protected] or call us 01865 546145 and we’ll help you and your cadet get your activity or experiment back on track.
I’ve got a discount coupon, but it isn’t working. What should I do?
I meant to cancel my subscription but forgot and it’s auto-renewed. Can you help me?
We get that things can slip so don’t worry. Just drop us a note at [email protected] or phone our Head of Happiness on 01865 564145, and we’ll do the cancellation for you (and send you a teary goodbye email later!).
What are your green credentials?
Science and sustainability go hand-in-hand at the Curiosity Box, and as scientists, we want to make this world a better place, not one littered with junk. So we have a simple but strict policy:
- All our packaging is biodegradable or recyclable, including our plastic packaging bags which are made from corn starch.
- Our lab coats are manufactured using responsibly sourced materials by properly employed staff.
- Wherever possible we source our supplies as locally as possible.
- The contents of the box are all sourced with the environment in mind. We use compostable cups and straws, eco cotton buds, eco glitter and reusable containers wherever possible.
- We challenge our Curiosity Community to find creative ways to use their box when they’re done with the activities!
