    Head of Explosions

Renee loves explosive ideas and is partial to a flashy science show. If she isn’t up to her eyes experimenting or in a school making kids go Wow! she can be found on her soapbox talking about science being for everyone! Renee loves playing Touch Rugby and experimenting with her kids…occasionally literally!

    Head of Happiness

Claire is one of those people who is always smiling. Honestly we’ve never seen her frown. As a result she looks about 10 years younger than her age (lessons to be learned here). Claire makes sure that our Curiosity Box values are felt by every customer in good times and bad, proving that happiness is catching! Claire loves a West End musical and ironically her favourite one so far is Le Miserables!

    Box Fresher

Angela and Clare are the Grease that lubes the wheels of production, packing your boxes with all the summer lovin’ and care you could hope for. Angela’s Greased Lightning is being walked by her mad dog Stanley, or curling up with a book & escaping reality every now & then.

    The Number Conductor

Liz regularly wields her baton to conduct the numbers here at CBHQ, making sure the pennies and pounds are behaving as they should.  When she’s not buried in spreadsheets, Liz will either be hanging out with her 2 whirlwind-type kids & husband or reassuring her dog Patrick that she still loves him the most … she sometimes enjoys reading, but rarely has time for such frivolities.

    Head of Storytelling

Jill weaves all our ideas, values and experience into stories of science that entrance and excite. With oodles of marketing experience, Jill moulds and directs our team of growth hackers to help us give as many children as possible cool sciency experiences. Jill spends any free time she has dancing with her two daughters and loves films, rainbows and trying to read the odd book.

    Curio and Quirk

Curio is a curious little monkey who is always asking questions. Curio encourages us to think creatively and question everything we do to make sure we are always making the best choices for people and the planet. Quirk is a wise young owl who is full of fascinating facts. Quirk connects us up with STEMists from all over the world so that we can access great role models and latest research.

    Everything Engineer

Emily does what she says on her name badge! She gets all the cool stuff that goes in your Box, she holds the reins from the minute you place your order to that exciting moment when your Box arrives at your door. Emily makes a mean macaroni and loves hanging out with her daughter.

    The Community Cultivator

Sam (otherwise known as Techpixie Sam) is all about engagement. Curiosity Box is all about community and Sam is the one who finds the content, partnerships and opportunities that are exciting and interesting for you and us. Sam likes nothing more than escaping to the seaside with her family for some coastal walks and beach art.

    Mailpimper

Sonal is our resident email obsessive. She only wants to send you the stuff you’ll like and is a little too much in love with her data spreadsheets. A real stickler for keeping the pry out of privacy, she’s basically the gatekeeper to our e-mails and will look after your info as if were her own. Sonal loves strolling through the wilds of the world and is a long-suffering Samosa addict.

    The Fascination Maker

Sarah has adventures in science at every opportunity, she is basically an 8-year-old in a grown up’s body and is responsible for creating activities that kids will go wild for. She harnesses the fascination in our University of Oxford interns to make our Boxes fresh and fantastic. Sarah has a new puppy, which means that aside from sparing an hour or so for her kids, she has no time for hobbies right now.

    The Production Pedant

Phill sits atop his lofty ladder and looks out over his manufacturing kingdom. He rules with an iron fist and a heart of gold, making sure that every pom pom and microscope is in the right place. He can regularly be found prototyping some piece of kit or other to make the production line sing. Phill is a master of laughter, and despite his best efforts is actually ruled by his Westie Jasper.

  • null

    Digital Dreamer

Sam is a total geek when it comes to hanging out on the internet. She always knows what’s hot, what’s not and what trend will follow. Sam spends most of her time in the bowels of Google, tinkering with our website and making sure that Curiosity Box is doing its digital best. When she finally puts down her smartphone, Sam is a fancy dress queen and enjoys watching Netflix with her dog

About Us
What is STEM Day in a Box?
Why We Do It
Our Adventure to Get Here

About Us

Founded by Renee Watson in 2016, The Curiosity Box is a small company with a big vision. We want to give 1 million children a wonder-filled experience of STEM. With a mission to answer the whats, whys and hows of the world, every month we send out boxes jam packed with sciency experiments, collectables and potential Wow! moments, to homes and schools all over the world so that children can enjoy finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and the wonder in the world.

From pocket money gifts to our award-winning monthly box of hands-on sciency fun to a whole STEM Day in a Box for your school, we create products that enable you to discover the science in your every day.

What is STEM Day in a Box?

STEM Day in a Box has been designed and developed here in the UK by the team at the Award-winning Curiosity Box, and in conjunction with researchers from The University of Oxford, to make it as easy as possible for teachers to run a super exciting STEM Day.

Although every STEM Day in a Box is mapped onto the curriculum learning objectives, it is designed to feel a bit different to a regular lesson, like an adventure through STEM that you don’t get every day. We want your students to go home buzzing about what they have done, confident in their ability to work scientifically and thinking about how they can make a difference to big global challenges.

Why We Do It

Our mission is to give kids everything they need to bring science to life for kids, and to have fun doing it! We want to brighten the lives of curious children by helping them to explore, question and discover the wonder in the world around them. Our ultimate goal? To join with you and lead a curiosity revolution so we can:

  • Enhance education by creating fun and easy-to-understand tools that spark and nurture curiosity;
  • Give EVERY child the opportunity to become the next Marie Curie, Albert Einstein or Ada Lovelace; and
  • Make the world a better place by encouraging children to explore how they can use STEM to help solve the planet’s problems.

We believe that STEM belongs to everyone! That by nurturing and aiding curiosity-led learning, we can help children explore the fascinating world of STEM by conducting fun and interesting experiments that build a child’s confidence and encourage them to question what’s possible.

Our ethical values mean that:

We’ve never used single-use plastic packaging (out crinkly bags are compostable corn starch) and we are working with suppliers to improve their eco-practices (this is a BIG challenge!);

We make our Boxes just near Oxford (no outsourcing to labour abroad where we can’t guarantee ethical standards), employ local people (mostly mums!); and

We utilise our connection with the University of Oxford to ensure our STEM content is current and totally mind-bending!

We want children to believe they CAN save the world, so we thought we had better lead by example!

Our Adventure to Get Here

I was born in a rural town in Australia. I didn’t know anyone who had been to University and often felt a bit different because I wanted to take things apart and know how and why things happened. That wonder and joy of exploring the world around you has made my life better, and I want all children to have the same opportunity.

Since my first attempt at science engagement, which involved a museum of body parts, I’ve run events such as the Oxfordshire Science Festival, as well as workshops in the smallest of primary schools. But mostly, I have been listening to, and observing, what kids say about science–they love it! When it is hands-on, and they are free to explore their thoughts and ideas; and to what parents say, which is so often something like: “I might have liked science, but it was SO boring at school.”

Along the way, I have gathered together a team of equally passionate, (and let’s be frank) quirky individuals, who have all worked tirelessly to package up our mission into a beautiful box of activities for kids, ready to nurture the curiosity, in your home.

We truly hope you find that The Curiosity Box delivers that warming feeling of family time well spent, a niggling need to ask questions, and most of all, the confidence your children need to start doing science!

Yours in Curiosity,

Renee
